The book presents original results of recent scientific studies of the domus romana of Largo Arrigo VII on the Aventine Hill.
The complex is better known as “Casa Bellezza” not – as one might imagine – due to the beauty of its decorations, but for the name of the owner of the villa. Following a historical-topographical introduction to the hill in the Roman era, the author describes the various building phases of the domus and its structure. The house is famous for its painted rooms in the “Fourth Style”, with fantasy architecture framing particular views against a bright yellow background. Exceptional new photographs illustrate these marvels for the first time, accompanied by a text of detailed analysis and comparative interpretation. The publication also includes appendices on the graffiti and architectonic and ceramic materials found at the site.
