Brera mai vista. Girovaghi, eccentrici, ponentini. Francesco Casella, Cremona 1517

This edition of Brera mai vista is devoted to Francesco Casella, a Cremonese artist who lived between the fifteenth and sixteenth century, whose activity is documented until 1517.

The eleventh edition of Brera mai vista, like all the others, presents a scientific study of a lesser known painting, The Martyrdom of Saint Stephen by Francesco Casella (Cremona 1460-1517?), which entered the Brera in 1809. The work has undergone painstaking restoration, which is documented in the volume. A complete picture of Francesco Casella emerges both from the analysis of the restored painting and its juxtaposition with his more well-known works. The comparisons with Dürer’s engravings and other artists of the period are most interesting.
