A leading figure on the European architectural scene in the second half of the 20th century: a rational, modern language that pays attention to architectural traditions.

[Álvaro Siza.
All the works] This volume, published for the retrospective exhibition in Mantua in 1999, retraces the chapters of the activity of the Portuguese architect and urban planner Álvaro Siza. Starting in the 1970s, he worked directly on an urban scale with the development plan for the city of Évora and the projects for the Museum of Contemporary Art and the School of Information Sciences in Santiago de Compostela, the Meteorology Center of the Olympic Village in Barcelona, and the Portuguese Pavilion for Expo ’98 in Lisbon, works in which rationalism and local traditions combine to define urban images of great expressive intensity.
Always focused on the traditional architecture of the regions in which he works, Siza has been able to transform different sources into a coherent rational, modern language, playing an internationally acclaimed role on the European architectural scene in the second half of the 20th century.
