A new, enlarged, updated edition of the monograph on the work of the Portuguese architect João Luís Carrilho da Graça.
By closely studying the landscape and territorial structure Carrilho da Graça is able to develop an architectural programme with plastic sensibility that brings out the expressiveness of a construction and the materials. This volume presents João Luís Carrilho da Graça’s oeuvre in chronological order, and documents his research linked to the Portuguese reality but also deeply rooted in the modernity of Mies van der Rohe and Giuseppe Terragni. The projects presented range from major works such as the Campo Maior Swimming Pool to the Institute of Social Communication, the Knowledge of the Seas Pavilion for the Lisbon Expo, and the very recent Documentation Centre at the Presidential Palace in Belem. As well as featuring works currently under construction, including the auditorium in Poitiers, the church in Portalegre and the Setubal Museum, the volume also presents a nucleus of new works in the planning stage: the Civic Centre in Planato do Ingote, near Coimbra; the extension to the German school in Lisbon; the project for pedestrian bridges over the river from Carpinteira and Valle da Goldra to Covilhã; the houses in the “Bom Sucesso” design resort in Obidus; the Maison de la Paix in Geneva, and last but not least, Casa Albani in San Diego, California.
