The publication of the proceedings of the Symposium on Cultural heritage in France that took place in May 2005 at the Scuola Normale di Pisa. The first section of the book develops the idea of patrimoine during the Revolution, the Empire and the Restoration (Poulot), but also the history of the preservation of cultural heritage in France until the law on 1913 (Lafarge) and during the V Republic (Poirier).
The study leads to the Twentieth century with an essay by Frier about the law of 1913 and with the presentation on the new Code du Patrimonie (Heritage code) of 2004 (Lafarge) and the problems connected to the decentralization analysed by Laniaud, particularly useful for a comparison with the Italian situation.
The second section of the book comprises essays by Alain Schnapp about “Antiquités nationales” from Guizot to Carcopino, and one by Michel Gras focusing on more recent years. Then there is a comparative essay by Roberto Balzani about Italy and France and one by Daniel Soutif proposing a comparison between the Italian and French situation concerning contemporary art
