Exceptionally, in the exhibition and the catalogue, two of the three original 'Crivelli carpets'.

As part of the celebrations marking the Brera gallery’s 200th anniversary, this important catalogue contains some of the main works of Carlo Crivelli (1430-c.1490): 11 panels painted at Camerino, including the Madonna della Candeletta, which has been restored for the occasion, and the Annunciation from Ascoli Piceno. Together with the story of Crivelli’s life and his relationship with the people who commissioned his paintings, the works prompt a reflection on the original layout of the Brera Gallery, the formation of important foreign galleries and the international vogue for collecting in the early decades of the 19th century. In addition to the most recent studies on these works, the book examines the techniques and studies used by Crivelli for reproducing original hand-made artifacts in his paintings and the extreme precision with which he painted gold and silver objects, crowns, daggers, terracottas of the Della Robbia school and 14th- and 15th-century Anatolian carpets. Because they appear frequently in his paintings, these have come to be known as ‘Crivelli carpets’.
