To mark the twentieth anniversary of the death of Filiberto Menna, the foundation dedicated to his memory organized a conference, supervised by Achille Bonito Oliva and Angelo Trimarco, and an exhibition, curated by Stefania Zuliani. The aim of these two events is to reopen to Italian and international culture some of the essential areas of thought of this scholar, a man who played an essential role in the art and art criticism scene in the post-WWII period. It is no coincidence that both the conference and the exhibition are named for two of his most important publications, namely, Il progetto moderno dell’arte and Filiberto Menna. La linea analitica dell’arte contemporanea. Where the word ‘modern’ is replaced by ‘contemporary’ – as we know, the title of Menna’s book is “La linea analitica dell’arte moderna”. Le figure e le icone – this is not merely a simple chronological slip, neither does it suggest a different course. Rather it is intended to emphasize the conviction that, even in the current wide-open and disturbing sphere of art, his ideas and standpoints still apply.
