A monographic exhibition on the work of Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus, currently the undisputed stars of the Portuguese architectural scene.
The exploration of the Mateus brothers focuses principally on single-family homes and is translated into highly refined and skilled results, which share the clear recognisability that distinguishes all their designs. The lightness achieved by sculpting the matter with simple expedients and close bond between concept and construction are the fruit of a meticulous exploration of the options offered by the excavation of matter. The investigation of the two designers is governed by their remarkable ability to annul the weight of the mass, overcoming gravity, and their choice of manners of expression that are far removed from the formal excesses that distinguish contemporary architectural languages. Their most important works include a house in Alenquer (1998- 2000), a house in Brejos de Azeitão (1999-2000), Barriera Antunes House (2000-03), the Sines Art Centre (2001-05), the Santa Marta Lighthouse and Museum in Cascais (2003-07), a house in Comporta (2009-10), the Furnas Research Centre (2010) and a house in Lieira (2010).
